Excerpt from "The Bonedigger" Chapter (Click Here for Printer Version) Shortly after Shannon ended our friendship, I met Vanessa on the beach. She was the friend of a woman who came down to watch us play volleyball on the Ferrari flag nets. Vanessa immediately took to me. She asked when I would be playing volleyball on the beach again. I told her; she showed up on that day by herself to watch. She asked me to walk her home. I asked her out and she gave me her number. After speaking a few times on the phone, we hit Guthrie’s. The date was just okay; she was far too quiet for my taste. I asked her out again, though. I know that people often get nervous on a first date, so I reserve judgment until a second date. She said she’d like that. After we spoke a few more times, she said she didn’t think it would be a good idea to go on another date. I replied, “Okay, no problem. It was nice meeting you.” Vanessa then said she’d like to be friends and invited me to a party she was throwing at her new condo several weeks later. Parties are always good places to meet people and she probably had some cute friends, so I accepted her invitation. A few weeks passed. I completely forgot about the party. A friend of mine, Vishal, who knew some of Vanessa’s friends, reminded me. He didn’t know where she lived and I couldn’t remember, so I called her. “Hey Vanessa, it’s Ian. How are you?” “Good, how are you?” “Pretty good, thanks. I was just calling to get your address again for the party tonight.” “Oh sure, no problem. Can I call you right back? I’m on the other line.” “Sure.” Vanessa called me back a few minutes later, “Hi, it’s Vanessa. Um, Ian, I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to come to the party, given our history and everything.” History? I instantly knew she was some kind of nut job. Stay away, stay away! Someone that delusional was bound to cause trouble. “Okay. Have a good party.” “Thanks.” No sooner had I hung up than the phone rang again. It was Vishal. “Dude, what happened? I just got a couple calls from some of Vanessa’s friends. She’s freaking out about you coming to the party.” All this over one lousy date? Good thing we didn’t go out twice; if we had, she probably would have sued me for alimony.
